When should I consider using PUR versus regular hot melt glue for perfect binding?
PUR glue is recommended when you have printed pages within a book that have heavy ink coverage (especially blacks & blues) and/or varnish bleeding into the spine of the book. It is also recommended on types of books that require more durability due to repetitive opening and closing. You may also want to consider using PUR glue on books that have the inside pages printed on wrong grain paper. Books that are printed on 100lb. coated or heavier and are wrong grain MUST be bound with PUR glue. Also see the PUR Service Description page- wrong grain, heavy text pages, heavy ink coverage, long term use, high usage book, coatings not knocked out etc…
What is your procedure regarding left over materials supplied by the customer?
Our standard procedure is to recycle leftover material two days after the job has been completed, as long as we have made count. If we do not make count, leftovers are to be picked up by customer. Any other arrangements MUST be made through your Production Coordinator.
What is the percentage of waste allowance required for my job?
We have a detailed spreadsheet indicating the required number of spoils we can expect to need on our web site at www.pacificbindery.com. If the job is more complex (ie: requiring multiple passes on our equipment) you will have to contact your Production Coordinator, as it will require a higher percentage than what is listed on our web site. Also see our Waste Guidelines page.
What kind of glue do we use for gluefolding?
Cold, remoistenable or fugitive glue.
What is the minimum book thickness for Perfect binding?
Minimum 0.07 cover to cover for Hot Melt glue
Minimum 0.079 cover to cover and minimum 0.055 w/o cover for PUR glue
